en·vi·ron·men·tal·ism/ēnˌvīrənˈmen(t)əlizəm/

noun: environmentalism

  1. concern about and action aimed at protecting the environment.

My topic today is one that I’ve been carrying in my heart for awhile and have been a bit gun shy to share. It doesn’t seem to get great reviews when I speak with close friends on it and yet I feel like the Lord has once again laid it on my heart to share.

Environmentalism is just one of many hot topics floating around the internet and social media lately. And, unfortunately, it is something that I’ve seen many Christians brush off. I’ve begun to be a bit more aware of what is happening on our planet and honestly, I’m shocked that the Christian community isn’t doing more about it.

It’s disheartening to me that when I make a comment about single use plastics, or trying to eat less beef, or literally anything involving “saving the planet,” Christians are the ones making the most fun of me. I have had some good conversations about the subject with my Christian friends but they always bring up the argument “Well, the rapture (aka Christ’s return) could happen any day now, so what’s the point?”

The point is that we live here. Our kids are going to live here. And the argument that the rapture is coming any day now is fairly weak, as not a single person alive can predict that.

Any day now could mean this month, next year or in a thousand years and honestly, we just don’t know.

We should care about this place we call home, because Christ has called us to not only be lights for Him, but to be good stewards of all He has given us. Which includes this planet! The reason that this is beginning to matter to me more and more is because of our charge to take care of what the Lord has provided for us. In truth, the world doesn’t need a million people doing environmentalism perfectly, but a million people doing the small things. If we all tried even a little bit it would make a H U G E difference.

Today I am just going to be hitting on one aspect of environmentalism, and that is plastic.

Single use plastics.

I still use them and I’m just now noticing how much I do, and every time I toss something in the trash it’s making me think about the damage I’m causing.

  1. Use glass containers for storage, leftovers, & your lunches – make Pyrex your best friend

  2. Reusable silicone baggies – say no to ziploc!

  3. Use real silverware or bamboo reusable utensils instead of plastic

  4. Bring a reusable cup the next time you go to grab a coffee!

  5. Ditch plastic wrap for reusable Beeswax Wrap

  6. Glass bottles, reusable bottles, refill on the go instead of buying and throwing out plastic

  7. Metal, paper, or silicone straws!

91% of plastic that is put in the recycling bin isn’t actually recycled. That’s a GINORMOUS number when you think about it. Growing up I vaguely recall seeing the recycling symbol on different things and just going by that. Now, I’m learning more about it and learning which plastics can actually be reduced, reused, and recycled. It seems very daunting to try and rework how you go about daily tasks, but I promise it isn’t as hard as you think.

Becoming more aware of the global crisis is a good thing. It isn’t dumb or silly or wrong. It is unfortunately our reality. A lot of people make fun of me for my views on this subject and I can deal with that. I would rather have people be aware and laughing then be ignorant of what’s going on.

I’m not sure about you guys, but Lord willing I hope to have a family someday, and I want my family to be able to live in this world and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. But bit by bit that creation is falling away and we don’t have to accept that as a fact, because we have the power to change it.

The earth and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants, belong to the Lord.Psalm 24:1

Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.Colossians 3:23-24
